Ever since I can remember I have been reading and writing. I recall writing a fully rhymed poem about the Super Bowl when I was in 1st grade, and I took it from there. When I began my undergraduate work, my intention was to become a poet. My writing has taken the form of songwriting, poetry, screenwriting, short stories and other creative endeavors. In the 90s I also wrote nonfiction for Details Magazine and the seminal online magazine Word. I cannot think of a time where I have been without a pen and paper nearby, picking it up and scribbling away…

When I went for some career counseling in my early recovery, on my list of top 5 fantasy professions was to be a working writer.

Now I am well into writing books about the work that I do. I feel like I have found that sweet spot where my creativity meets my spirituality and out come some words dedicated to hopefully create conditions for the end of suffering. Clinical Dharma was written out of a feeling of desperation related to the burnout I saw amongst healers and helpers. In EMDR Therapy and Mindfulness for Trauma Focused Care, the first of many collaborations with Dr. Jamie Marich, we excitedly put on the page our combined knowledge and passion for the possibility of trauma resolution and health through best trauma focused practices. And Mindfulness for Anger Management describes and makes actionable for many what I have learned about these subjects of mindfulness and anger over the last almost 30 years. In Trauma and the 12 Steps: A Trauma Responsive Workbook and Trauma and the 12 Steps: Daily Meditations and Reflections, I had the opportunity to work with Jamie to augment her book Trauma and the 12 Steps and provide gentle yet action-oriented trauma-informed tools to assist and enhance anyone’s recovery journey, however they may define recovery. My most recent collaboration with Jamie, Healing Addiction with EMDR Therapy: A Trauma-Focused Guide, affirmed by Springer Publishing as the first book to underscore the efficacy of EMDR therapy as a primary modality for treating trauma and addiction, offers a comprehensive collection of best practices and strategies for using EMDR therapy to treat addictive disorders.

The poetry continues, the songs are brewing again, while fiction remains a Mt. Everest for me… but daily the words continue… and I hope to be able to continue to share them with you along the way...
